Networking with Ice Cube
______________________
Since I have already talked about the business cards enough, I will just tell
you that this little card can go a long long long way. It is the most common
form of networking that exists.
Always keeping track of the people you meet is one way to always have
someone to promote your new material to VIA internet, web site, e-mail, and even
the phone call. Since you already know that meeting people and being out in the
public at all times is the key to networking which leads to success, here is an
example of how it helped me and my team in Phoenix, Arizona. Just preparing to
leave Milwaukee, Wi. to go to Phoenix, I was co- hosting a night with Ice Cube
and Homer Blow of another local radio station in Milwaukee, where Homer Blow is
now the current PD, WNOV ! Homer Blow, Ice Cube, and I were in a white artist
van going from club to club promoting Ice Cubes movie " Friday" While we were in
transit, one of Ice Cube's assistants gave me a business card and said call me
anytime. I slipped the business card in my wallet and partied the night away!
Six months later I was into my new job in Phoenix and hosting hosting a club on
a Saturday night. I had seen that James, the assistant that I met with Ice Cube
was based out of Phoenix, so I called his number on the business card. Come to
find out he was promoting a song for cube and asked if he could come to the club
and give out 100 free CD's / posters etc....... James showed up at the
club with 5 boxes of CD's and paraphernalia to hand out to the people in the
club. Mikey Freeman, Big Willy, and AL 3 ( a local DJ in Phoenix ) were all
huddled up in the DJ booth when James came in and introduced himself. Up until
this point I was able to introduce James to everyone as Ice Cubes personal
assistant. He then proceeded to AL 3 an album saying, " If you play this in the
club tonight, I will bring Cube to the station next Friday for interviews " AL
3, Mikey, and the crew looked at me and said, let's hear it. Within 20 Minutes,
Phoenix Arizona was the first city in the world to hear "We Be Clubbin" and the
song blew up over night. Don Parker ( VP of Next Media ) had complete
trust in Mikey Freeman, as Mikey was his Music Director. Mikey took this album
to Don, and Don in turn played it on Power 92 KKFR Radio. This networking
starts out slow and builds up as you go along, that is why it is important to
always have business cards, and always act professional.
