Burke Allen is a Consultant in Radio. Consultants help find talent and work with specific venues to make the venue better. Music Consultants help find Musicians.... etc.... 

Putting yourself in the right place takes a little planning on your part. If you know there is someone in town that is auditioning for talent, you need to put yourself in that location to audition, this is the same mentality is being in the right place at the right time. Being in the right place at the right time is the key to meeting the right people! You might be asking yourself right now, " where is the right place and when is the right time ?" hahahaha the answer is simple, be out all the time, in the places you know are suitable for what you do, and eventually you will get the right time part down !

1. Can you give a young up and coming talent a piece of advice as to how they can prepare to promote themselves to someone like yourself ?

" Have a great, slick presentation package that you can both email and overnight.  The package should include (in a nice folder to keep it from getting mangled) a composite of about 3 minutes of your best work.  If we like what we hear, we may ask for more tape of you, so be sure you can back up that 'best of' tape.  That tape should highlight you executing a variety of things...for producers .... how well you produce elements...... for On Air talent, promo liners, station ID's, phoners, weather, etc. as well as a variety of deliveries...up, medium, down, soft, etc. that showcases your versatility."
 
"Your resume', which should include your last several industry positions and how long you were there, phone numbers where we can reach you and at least 3 references we can check.  Also, include any press clippings, photos, interviews, etc. you have that will show us what kind of self-marketer you are.  Finally, check your work.  If you misspell or miss-label parts of your package, it shows a lack of attention to detail and you'll likely be passed over for openings.  Then, follow up each month with a phone call or email to the person you sent the package to."

Even if your not in radio, take this information serious, this information shows you what the top brass in the high places in Entertainment look for in a general aspect, they are looking for talent, a neat presentation, organization, correct grammar, and a buzz to go with your material.
