One night I was on the air in Miami, and I really upset a listener by calling
her "over due for a diet plan."
At the time I thought it was hilarious and I probably made 10,000 people laugh
when I said it on the air, however, every time that woman heard me on the radio,
no matter who she was with, no matter where she was listening, the only thing
she would say to whoever was around her was, " He was an ass to me and
called me a heffer. " Although it seems a little funny now, it wasn't too funny
to see how fast it would spread that I had been rude to someone. Lesson learned,
word of mouth spreads faster than wild fire when there is negativity involved
because people want something to talk about and when you give them ammo, it is
just fuel for a fire to burn and spread/
Bad word of mouth is the worst form of promotion you could ever have for your
craft, your band, your group, your artistic nature, your logo, your company
name....... It is like a black cloud that follows you with a bad perception to
match. People hear stories and they automatically choose whether or not the
truth depending on where the information source is. Jennifer Lopez was on
my show to talk about how much the media plays in word of mouth information, and
how she handles the negative side and this is what she had to say.
1. question: How do you deal with bad publicity that
spawns negative word of mouth ?
Jennifer Lopez: You just have to learn to cope with it,
and you say, you know what ? They don't know the truth, There always going to
write things that are miss-quoted, un true, fabricated, and every body is
going to pick it up if it's an interesting tid bit, and you have to learn how to
deal with it.....

regardless of your art form, you will have to deal with good and bad journalists
that write for newspaper, print, and magazines. In the example above Jennifer
was referring to a magazine article written about her that was far from the
truth.
